Firstly, I think AmigaAMP is an excellent program. I really like it and now that I have fixed my trouble, I can play lots of songs to my heart's content
I was plagued by crashes ever since I updated my OS4 to update#3. AmigaAMP was crashing about 8 tries out of 10. When it did launch, I could use it fine. If I quit, it would never launch a second time without resetting the machine.
It got even worse after I formatted my hard drive and installed OS 4 update#4 from scratch.
This had me completely baffled ... until just a few days ago, when I noticed that powerpc.library always showed up in SnoopDos and grim reaper everytime AmigaAMP crashed. Renamed powerpc.library to something else, NO MORE CRASHES. Checked several times just to be sure.
Now, reading through the discussion on this site, I see that someone else discovered this before:
"powerpc.library from update#3 crashes"
I will also add:
"powerpc.library from update#4 crashes"

UPDATE:
I mentioned this on amigaworld.net and number6 came up with another suggestion which also works fine.
"Try leaving it in libs and changing AmigaAmp Prefs/System/Engine to "WarpUP""
So, I gave this a try and reset the machine .... BINGO ... comes up in WarpUp mode and works fine (after renaming powerpc.library back to normal).
I also noticed, doing a SnoopDos trace, that AmigaAMP no longer searches for ppc.library, 68060.library, 68040.library and powerpc.library.
However, now I get that nice message when I quit AmigaAMP ...
***Command 'AmigaOS4:AmigaAMPv2.16/Engines/External' returned with unfreed signals 80000000!
Anyways, it works fine and that's all that counts.

Hi redfox,
thanks for your feedback!
I'm currently working on cleaning up the PPC code and can hopefully fix that "unfreed signal" bug along the way. |

Thanks for the update this weekend Tom! Looks like you solved that problem with the unfreed signal by replacing it with a Grim Reaper...
In all seriousness the latest version (2.17) does throw a GR when exiting the program. I'll provide a crashlog just as soon as GR will write one for me.

Oh dear!
I'm afraid until I've got the OS4 developer system up and running I can't solve this problem. Under OS3.9/WarpUP it works fine so it's probably something with the shared memory or the order in which shared resources are allocated / freed which OS4 (or at least its WarpUP emulator) is more picky about. |
